The Self-Guided "Time Travel" Drive

The 2.6-mile driving self guided tour was the best way for our group to experience Poverty Point. The provided numbered pamphlet helps you visualize what the landscape looked like 3,400 years ago. The Ridges are subtle "waves" in the ground, as we drove the assigned route, we were crossing the six massive concentric, C-shaped ridges. These weren't just mounds; they were the foundations for an entire city of domestic homes. Mound A, The Bird Mound, stands at over 70 feet tall, this is the second-largest mound in North America (only Monks Mound at Cahokia is larger). Legend and early archaeology suggest it was built in the shape of a massive bird in flight, and research shows it may have been constructed in a staggering 90 days. It's amazing to learn the route you take to see the Poverty Point was once a 43-acre leveled plaza where thousands of people gathered for trade and ceremony.

A Museum of "PPOs" and Research

The Visitor Center at Poverty Point is world-class because it explains how these people lived without the "standard" tools of civilization. Poverty Point Objects, PPOs, we saw displays of these small, hand-formed clay balls. Since the people here didn't have natural stones to heat for cooking, they engineered these clay "stones" to hold heat in their roasting pits. The research on display is mind-blowing. Archaeologists have found rocks from as far away as the Appalachians and the Great Lakes, proving that Poverty Point was a massive trade hub long before the invention of the wheel.

The Junior Ranger Achievement

We were ecstatic to find out that they offer a Junior Ranger book and badge. It was the cherry on top that our kids earned their Junior Ranger badges while learning about this site. Here is some basic information about the Junior Ranger program. Since Poverty Point is a National Monument (managed by the State of Louisiana), it is one of the few sites where you can get the prestigious National Park Service badge at a State Historic Site. In 2026, the Junior Ranger booklet has been updated to specifically highlight its status as one of only 26 UNESCO World Heritage Sites in the U.S., putting it on the same level as the Pyramids of Giza or the Grand Canyon.
